Yoga and Scoliosis

The Cubistic Body

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal asymmetry that involves three planes in space: the vertical plane (a lateral flexion, or a side bend), the sagittal plane (front to back, comprising flexion and extension patterns), and the horizontal plane (the plane of rotation). Because there is never only one major curve but always a combination of curves and compensations, scoliosis involves many fulcrums. Any intervention should be addressed from a three-dimensional pattern to obtain spinal elongation, stability, and mobility.

It is possible to practice Yoga with an asymmetric spine. The Iyengar system of Yoga gives practical and consistent tools to perceive the layers of scoliosis. The practice teaches the student to pay attention to each moment and to every detail, through the experiential learning that the asanas provide.

One of the many gifts that Mr. Iyengar the creator of the Iyengar System of Yoga, has given to the West is the use of props as tools for better alignment. The props modify the various asanas according to one's need a person with scoliosis learns how to feel length, stability, balance and develop a refined sensitivity in both sides.
